Habitat Lighting UK
Habitat is a name linked with a modern & contemporary design ethos. From its very beginnings in 1964 Habitat has built a reputation for providing design lead products of furniture, homeware and contemporary lighting. Started in 1964 by Terence Conran Habitat offered a new and “European” way of shopping and new and exciting range of products including a range of Habitat lighting. The first Habitat store to open was in Fulham in South West London. The store quickly became a success as it offered new & exciting designs in a wide range of everyday products and homewares. Habitat gave a new lease of life and offered new and funky designs to many household items that had, in post war Britain, become staid and predictable.
Following on from the success of the Fulham store Habitat opened a new flagship store in Tottenham Court Road in central London, the central London store opened in 1966, this was also the year that Habitat started a postal service for some of the Habitat range of products, this postal/delivery service is something we take for granted now but Habitat were trailblazers and offered the chance for everyone to have a touch of modern design in any British home. In 1971 Habitat started offering take away “flat pack” furniture for home assembly and by 1977 Habitat offered a House pack service which meant that larger items of furniture could be delivered to UK homes for self-assembly.
Habitat have always been forward thinking organisation both in terms of the customer experience and of course in design, over the years they have employed top names as head of design including in 1998 Tom Dixon.
Here are some of my favourites from the current Habitat UK Contemporary lighting range

The Gerrit Black and White Ceiling Light shade.
The Gerrit black and white easy fit shade’s layered design and monochrome colour palette will add a sense of calm into your home. Extended: W70 x H22 x D70cm.
A handmade lampshade, this light’s minimalist design is made from white cotton and finished with a black trim for maximum visual impact. Gerrit’s two-tiered design helps emit a soft glow when lit and creates a striking centrepiece when unlit. The shade has an Orioen5tal feel to its design.
A Habitat original design, this sleek design looks best hung low over a dining table.
