A Guide to Habitat Lighting UK

Habitat Lighting UK

Habitat is a name linked with a modern & contemporary design ethos. From its very beginnings in 1964 Habitat has built a reputation for providing design lead products of furniture, homeware and contemporary lighting. Started in 1964 by Terence Conran Habitat offered a new and “European” way of shopping and new and exciting range of products including a range of Habitat lighting. The first Habitat store to open was in Fulham in South West London. The store quickly became a success as it offered new & exciting designs in a wide range of everyday products and homewares. Habitat gave a new lease of life and offered new and funky designs to many household items that had, in post war Britain, become staid and predictable.
Following on from the success of the Fulham store Habitat opened a new flagship store in Tottenham Court Road in central London, the central London store opened in 1966, this was also the year that Habitat started a postal service for some of the Habitat range of products, this postal/delivery service is something we take for granted now but Habitat were trailblazers and offered the chance for everyone to have a touch of modern design in any British home. In 1971 Habitat started offering take away “flat pack” furniture for home assembly and by 1977 Habitat offered a House pack service which meant that larger items of furniture could be delivered to UK homes for self-assembly.
Habitat have always been forward thinking organisation both in terms of the customer experience and of course in design, over the years they have employed top names as head of design including in 1998 Tom Dixon.

I have reviewed some of the Tom Dixon range of lighting HERE.

Here are some of my favourites from the current Habitat UK Contemporary lighting range

  1. Wow, they have very beautiful, modern and classic designs.

I completely understand why after seeing them can be led to believe that they are very expensive. But I had to check the website for myself to see ( I am very curious by nature). And I can pretty much confirm that there is something for every pocket.

I have a question, does Habitat lighting accept working in collaboration with interior designers? It will really be great to have it included in my current home design but I am not sure if what I want will fit in the design. If it is possible then my interior designer will see what will fit better.

    Thanks

    1. Hi There. Regarding interior designs – If you go to the Habitat website there is an “Inspiration” tab that has ideas and interior design tips and ideas.

      Regards Michael

  2. Lovely designs, they seem to be a cross between lighting and art. Love some of the items that you highlighted in your post, although I would appreciate them more if there were more “lifestyle” images of these items…. how would they look in an ensemble versus just having a picture of the item.

    1. Hi Bob. Thank you for the comment, It is a difficult balance to get the lifestyle image versus showing the product in detail, however there are many good “in use” images on the Habitat website.
